wood curios Hanukkah The Dreidel Game, Hanukkah Crafts & Fun for Kids
 Powered by Max Banner Ads

Children, as well as adults, love to play the Dreidel Game during Hanukkah (also spelt Chanukah), and a wide range of dreidels can easily be purchased online at judaica shops. The selection and variation of styles available can be overwhelming, but the game played with them is always the same!

A dreidel (also spelt draydel and draydle) is a four-sided top or any shaped spinning item with four Hebrew symbols on it. The symbols are each a different Hebrew letter: nun, gimel, heh, and shin. These four letters stand for the words: nes, gadol, hayah, and sham. The translation of these four words is: “A Great Miracle Happened There.” In Israel, the last letter on the dreidel is peh instead of shin. This last letter stands for the word poh, which changes the meaning to: “A Great Miracle Happened Here.”

To play the Dreidel Game, you start with a “pot” in the middle. The “pot” can be made of candy, coins, chocolate gelt, or any other small thing of value, although most times children play with gelt. Gelt is the Yiddish word for “money,” but in this context, gelt often refers to chocolate coins widely available during Hanukkah. Each player is given a certain amount of gelt and puts one piece into the center to start the “pot.” The players then take turns spinning the dreidel, and whichever side faces up (or whichever Hebrew letter is pointed to) when it stops spinning determines what you do:

If the letter NUN is facing up, you do NOTHING.
If the letter SHIN is facing up, you PUT ONE piece of gelt into the pot.
If the letter HEH is facing up, you TAKE HALF the gelt from the pot.
If the letter GIMEL is facing up, you TAKE ALL the gelt from the pot.
If ever the pot is empty, each player puts one piece of gelt into the center. When a player runs out of gelt, he or she is out of the game! The winner is the last one left in.

Some dreidels are hollow and can be filled with candy or chocolate. Some play music when they spin. And still others can be stacked on top of one another as they spin. They are made from many different materials, including plastic, wood, ceramic, glass, gold, and silver. The plastic versions cost as little as ten cents, but gold and silver dreidels can cost in the hundreds of dollars. Even though dreidels are mostly enjoyed by children, no matter how young or old, many adults collect ornate and beautiful dreidels, and display them in china or curio cabinets.

“L’dor l’dor” means “from generation to generation,” and it refers to the importance of passing down traditions and religious practices to your children. Hanukkah is one of best times to pass down your Jewish traditions to your kids because of how many resources there are, and how much fun the holiday is.

Fortunately, it’s easy to help your kids enjoy and understand the Hanukkah season, and to get them involved in Hanukkah activities. Of course, most popular is the dreidel game. If your kids don’t have dreidels, buy at least one for each of them and teach them how to play. If you want to encourage their artistic side, you can get dreidels your kids can color and decorate themselves, or even ones that they can build themselves such as the new clay dreidel that can be molded, dried and then painted before it is played with.

Other activities during the Hanukkah season include reading Hanukkah books, eating candy and gelt, coloring, putting together puzzles, sending out Hanukkah cards, making cookies with Hanukkah cookie cutters, playing with Hanukkah stickers, and more. Kids can even get Hanukkah yo-yos that play traditional songs like The Dreidel Song, which begins, “I have a little dreidel.”

It is common for each child in the family to have their own Hanukkah menorah to light. But if you have kids who are too young to light candles, then you may want to consider some of the kid-friendly menorahs available today. For instance, there are stuffed menorahs with flames that Velcro on, and thin plastic ones that stick to the window and have separate plastic flames that can be attached.

Because the Hanukkah season is so festive, there are big parties and family gatherings. Many families give their children a present each night of Chanukah and decorate their homes with blue and white festive decorations and electric lights, often shaped like dreidels. Gifts run the gamut from gelt to clothing, from hanukkah toys and crafts to video games.

Some families choose to get and fill Hanukkah bags for their kids so they don’t feel left out when their non-Jewish friends receive gifts and candy in stockings. Again, all of these wonderful items are easily available online as you shop from your armchair, and you can shop to your heart’s content as you plan on making this a hanukkah for your kids to remember with hanukkah toys, activities, dreidels, puzzles, cookie cutters, menorahs, and more.

wood curios Applying Feng Shui To Your Home
 Powered by Max Banner Ads

One of the newest home decorating trends is Feng Shui. This style has created a dynamic impact on today’s home decorating styles. From full sized wall murals in Oriental colors and simple designs of orange blossoms, or stark brown trees on pumpkin orange, to the minute details caused by treating walls with texture created from sand instead of wallpaper, the Feng Shui impact has left a print on the home decorating industry that will remain around for several years.

At first, feng shui is a complex decorating scheme that is almost impossible to implement in the average household. In true feng shui fashion, this truth is balanced with simplicity that the most novice home decorator can successfully create in their own home.

The feng shui home trends are based on a clutter-free, clean space with a fresh sense of renewal. The American and European décor designs use dead or open spaces to display wealth in the form of art, curio cabinets, entertainment units, and collections.

This fills a home with ‘dead’ items that have no soul and create a negative effect on the human soul. A sense of renewal is created by returning people to nature. This is not to be confused with ‘going back to nature’ or bringing in items from nature, like shower sheets with bears on them.

Instead, it involves bringing elements from nature into the home in a way that touches the soul and helps humans reconnect with a more peaceful and satisfying existence.

This is done by simply bringing fresh items like flowering plants, and/or decor elements in fresh gentle colors of the natural elements. The most common are apple green, deep brown, clear blue, and gentle yellow.

There are a million ways these colors can be added to any room without overpowering the room and changing the mood. Replace the ceramic roosters with quartz crystals or river rocks. Toss out the dead branches and bring in a live tree. Replace the repetitive patterned wallpaper with a wall mural that depicts a single tree, sparse and simple, with a single brilliant red blossom.

The first step to creating a feng shui look is to toss all the clutter in the garbage. Remove everything that does not serve a purpose. Hide televisions and DVD collections. However, hiding them is not enough. Any item that is not used at least once a month needs to be removed from the room and stored.

In many homes, this will result in several empty shelves. If there is no backing on these shelves, paint a water scene behind. If there is a backing, consider removing the shelving unit all together. You do not always need to paint natural scenes on the walls. Water can be depicted by hanging a mirror.

There are a few things to avoid. Never include the color red. Even small amounts of red in candles or trim on a book, will disrupt the room’s impact on your emotions.

There are some simple ways to turn a bare looking room into a feng shui room. A large vase with a few bamboo sticks in it. Replace wood along the doors with metal or mirrors. Add texture to walls using grass wallpaper, sand, or murals. Each of these treatments have basic, novice, and expert levels. It only takes a little time to find the project that you need to make your home perfect.

wood curios Cheap And Easy Wall Decorating
 Powered by Max Banner Ads

Decorating our walls seems to be a huge dilemma to most home decorators, but it need not be. Here are some quick and easy ways to dress up your walls, on a budget!

The most common mistake most people make in decorating their walls is to sprinkle things around just to fill empty space. Instead, draw an imaginary rectangle on the main focal wall in the room you wish to dress up. Now fill that rectangle with a grouping of related art, such as portraits, plates, or clocks. This makes much a better impact on the room than the “sprinkle” effect.

Try to hang larger scale items to make your rooms seem bigger. This doesn’t mean you have to run out and spend hundreds or thousands on a large painting! Hang a rug or a pretty quilt. Create a dramatic wall hanging with a large piece of plywood, some paint, and one inspirational word in large letters. Faith, “Believe” or “Dream” are great ones. Paint a simple border and background in neutral colors. Then sketch on your word in blocks with pencil, and fill in with paint.

Try setting off a special portrait or a wall collection by painting a background “frame”. Make the frame at least 4-6 inches larger than the art, tape off with painters tape, and fill in with a darker version of your wall color.

If you have dozens of different frames and pictures, tie them all together by painting the frames all the same color. Black gives an elegant touch to any style décor. White is very fresh, and a bright color can be fund in a contemporary design.

Consider using stencils to add detail and design to your walls. It’s easy, relatively fast, and inexpensive. Pick up a simple design to wrap around windows and doors, or to add detail to your painted “frames” around your wall art groupings.

Finally, look at unconventional items as wall art. A weathered piece of driftwood accents over a doorway, or an old wooded box can hang as a curio cabinet. Simple wooded blocks can be attached to the wall as candleholders or display shelves. Your children’s christening dress can be hung as memory art, or you can frame a piece of the maternity dress you loved while you were pregnant with your youngest. Use your imagination!

Decorating walls doesn’t have to be daunting, just use these easy ideas to get you started!

wood curios The Eras of Furniture Past
 Powered by Max Banner Ads

Furniture is any movable object in your house that makes it possible to live or work. This includes anything that you use for storage, to sit on in and any flat surface you use to eat at or to write. Furniture is seen in a number of different ways. Some see it just as decoration. Others see it only for its practical uses. Look into the past. Look at how other eras perceived furniture. Was it important to them? Did they decorate their homes with multiple couches and mirrors on every wall?

Ancient furniture from the stone age was made out of wood. This furniture is no longer in existence because it had rotten away long ago. We have found out anything we know about their furniture from their art and wall drawings. Their art pieces, such as statues and vases, were made out of stone and have been very well preserved.

One of the only surviving examples of ancient furniture comes from Egypt. The Egyptians believed they could bring their possessions with them into the after life, therefore their furniture was buried with them and preserved in the air tight tombs. They had copied the legs of most of their furnishings from the legs of real animals. The chair seats were not flat. They were concave as to fit the body of a human.

Greek furniture is very much influenced by the Egyptian furniture. Greek furniture was made to be comfortable, not stylish. They never overly decorated their furniture. The wood had elegant carvings. They never had a lot of furniture in their houses. They liked to have a lot of space in their homes.

Romans did not keep a lot of furniture in their homes either. They loved to have space in their homes. They decorated the walls with mosaics and paintings. The Romans had very simple furniture. They usually had a table, lamps, a couch or bed and chairs and stools. They never had dressers and desks or curio cabinets. They did not not have mirrors adorning their walls or hat racks in the corners. Nor did they have mantles and bookshelves.

Furniture produced by American settlers was made to suit their lives. It was usually very simple furniture, considering they had just settled into a new country. Some of their furniture may have been based on the styles in England, but much of the furniture was very simple and was made just to have a chair or a table in the house. Style was not considered very often.

Furniture has been around for as long as we can track time. The simplicity changes with the culture and times. Many ancient civilizations have made a great impact on how we style furniture today and how we furnish our homes. Many of our furniture are either roman inspired, Egyptian inspired, or modern. There is no doubt that we owe every design and inspiration to our ancestors.

Whether our furniture is designed for simplicity or elegance, the influence can definitely be found in an era long past. It almost always gives a story and idea of how people were living their lives in those times.
